Leonard was born in Normandy on April 30, 1921. He joined the Army at Torbay, Newfoundland on March 29, 1943. He served with the Canadian Infantry Corps (Q.O.R. of Canada) as a Rifleman during World War II and served in Canada, the United Kingdom, Continental Europe , North Atlantic Area, France and Germany. He went overseas in January of 1944, and saw action in Holland and while at the Rhine he took sick and was hospitalized. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He returned home and was discharged on April 11, 1946.
