Sault Ste Marie Riots 1903

On September 29, 1903 (then) Brevet Major Malcolm Mercer commanded the detachment of the Queen’s Own Rifles (70 men and 3 officers) which was part of a force of regulars and militia (48th Highlanders and 10th Royal Grenadiers) rushed to Sault Ste Marie to quell a riot of unpaid workers of the Consolidated Lake Superior Corporation. Good fortune smiled and no violence occurred. After a pleasant trip the detachment arrived home on 2 October.
