Major Joseph Boyce Thompson, VD was born in Toronto on 16 February 1857, son of Thomas Thompson and Hester Carbet.

On 29 May 1883 he married Ida Maude McCausland and had two daughters. He joined the National Club when he was 21 and continued as a member until his death on 5 January 1944 at the age of 86.

He was an active member of The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada for 20 years.

  • 16 December 1881 – Appointed 2nd Lieutenant (Provisional)
  • 3 March 1882 – Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant
  • 1 September 1882 – Promoted Lieutenant
  • 19 March 1886 – Promoted Captain
  • 19 March 1896 – Promoted Brevet Major and OC A Company, 2nd Battalion
  • 22 August 1901 – Transferred to the Reserve of Officers
  • Awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers decoration (VD)
