Major H. (Harry) McCabe, MMM, CD was born in Dundee, Scotland and immigrated with his parents to Canada in 1957.

Major McCabe started his military career on April 27, 1961 with The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada. He rose through the ranks to Chief Warrant Officer and was appointed Regimental Sergeant Major in 1980.  He was subsequently appointed District Sergeant-Major for the Toronto Militia District in 1985 (now 32 Brigade) and later the Standards CWO for both Central Militia Area and Land Force Central Area.

He transferred to the Cadet Instructor Cadre (CIC) in 1994 and joined 748 Markham Army Cadet Corps.  He was appointed Commanding Officer of 748 Markham in 1999 and to Regional Cadet Advisor (Army) for Central Area Cadet Detachment from 2001 to 2006.  He was Officer Commanding (OC) Alpha Coy (Drill & Ceremonial) at the Blackdown Cadet Training Centre for 2003 to 2006; OC Golf Coy in 2007 and OC Service Support in 2008 and 2009.  From April 1, 2005 to April 27, 2010, Major McCabe served as the CIC Branch Advisor for Central Region and represented the Region as a member of the National CIC Branch Advisory Council.

In 2011, he joined the Army Cadet League of Ontario and was appointed Liaison Officer for the 2817 Lindsay Army Cadet Corps.  He was subsequently appointed Zone Liaison Officer for the Kawartha Lakes & Peterborough Area supporting both 2817 Lindsay and 2672 Peterborough Army Cadet Corps.  In 2014 he was elected as 1st  Vice President for the League and also elected as Director, of the Army Cadet League of Ontario Foundation.

Major McCabe was awarded the Order of Military Merit in 1971 for saving the life of a recruit who had dropped a grenade during a life fire exercise.  He was awarded the 3rd Bar to his Canadian Forces Decoration in May 2003.  In addition, he has also been awarded the following medals and decorations, the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal; Canada 125th Anniversary Medal; Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal; the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal; Serving Brother of the Order of St John and the St John Long Service Medal and Bar.

Major McCabe worked for IBM Canada for 37 years and held various management positions in Manufacturing, Human Resources and Corporate Security.  He took early retirement in January 2004.  He holds a diploma in Business Administration & Human Resources from Centennial College, Toronto.

He married the former Gail Bedley and had two children and four grandchildren.

Major McCabe retired from the Canadian Forces on April 27, 2010, after 49 years of service.
