Joseph was born on September 21, 1922 in Sault Ste. Marie, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on October 14, 1943 and served with the Queen’s Own Rifles Scout and Sniper Platoon in England, France, Netherlands and Belgium. He was wounded by a 9mm bullet to his right leg and was hospitalized in Belgium. After spending several months in England convalescing, he returned home and was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He was discharged on April 27, 1946. After his discharge, he returned to work at the Algoma Steel Plant. In May 1947, he married Lena Massovich and they had six children. Joseph has been a member of Sault Ste. Marie Legion Branch 25 for 69 years.
