Langton, Joseph Graham

Brigadier General Joseph Graham Langton VD, was born in Ontario on 14 Oct 1868, son of Thomas Langton and Fannie McKim.

In 1891 Langton married Margaret Jane Pearcy with whom he had at least six children.

By 1887 he had enlisted with The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada and rose to the rank of Colour Sergeant by 1893. In 1896 he took a commission in the 20th Regiment, Halton Battalion before transferring to the Canadian Army Service Corps in 1902.

During the First World War, he served in a variety of senior positions in Canada and transferred to the Reserve of Officers in 1920.

Langton was President of The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada Memorial Association which raised funds for, built, and dedicated the Cross of Sacrifice at St Paul’s Anglican Church on Bloor Street in 1931.

He died of a heart attack in Muskoka, Ontario on 12 July 1935 and is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Plot L, Section 24, Lot 17. At the time of his death, he was secretary of the Toronto Harbour Commission.
