Jackson, Robert Moore

Lance Corporal Robert Moore Jackson

404757 Lance Corporal Robert Moore Jackson was born on 27 September 1896 in Toronto, Ontario, the son of William Robinson Jackson and Elizabeth Bickerstaff.

His brother, Alan William Jackson, was also in the QOR and served in WWI and a cousin, Everet Moore Bickenstaff, also served in the 3rd Battalion CEF and was killed in action. A nephew, Lieutenant Colonel Moore Ivan Jackson served in WWII and post-war became the commanding officer of The Queen’s Own Rifles (Militia). A second nephew, Alan William Flint Jackson also served with the QOR in WWII.

R. M. Jackson was working as a clerk at his father’s office, Potts and Company, when he enlisted on 8 April 1915 with the 35th Battalion CEF. He had previously been a QOR cadet according to an obituary.

He arrived in England in October 1916 and after taking a demotion in rank (from Sergeant) in order to go to France, was posted to the 20th Battalion on 19 March 1916. He spent a week in May in hospital with influenza.

At Courcelette Lance Corporal Jackson received a severe wound in his left knee which led to amputation. After gangrene set in he died of wounds on 29 October 1916, aged 20, and is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, grave reference VIII. D. 154.

In his military will, he left all his effects to his mother.
