George was born in Little Shute, Wisconsin, United States on February 1, 1924.
He enlisted in the Army on February 2, 1942. He served with the Algonquin Regiment and the Queen’s Own Rifles in Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Belgium, and Holland during World War II. He took part in the liberation of Holland and suffered heavy shelling by the Germans in Antwerp. He was discharged on January 29, 1946.
Lance Corporal Hermsen was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the France and Germany Star, the 1939-45 Star, the Defence Medal, and the Italy Star.
He was a member of Kapuskasing Legion Branch 85 for 51 years.
George passed away on May 24, 2004.
