7319 Rifleman Walter Stanstead Blight was born 6 September 1877 in St Catherines, Lincoln, Ontario, son of Walter Henry Blight and Elizabeth Lownsborough. By 1891 Blight was living with his father and sisters in Toronto. His mother had died in 1890.

He worked as a pressman and served with The Queen’s Own Rifles (G Company 1897 to 1899 as per muster roll 00184) before enlisting in Toronto with the Royal Canadian Regiment’s Special Service Battalion on 20 October 1899 which was recruited to serve with British Forces in the South African war.

Blight fought at Paardeberg, Driefontein, and Cape Colony before contracting enteric fever and dying on 15 April 1900.

He is buried in the President Brand Cemetary in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
