He enlisted with the Regular Army at Ottawa in 1953 and joined the 2nd Battalion, The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada in July 1957. He was a member of B Company serving in Germany at the time of his death.
Charles died in a car accident at Mohne Talsperre in Germany, 7 February 1960 at the age of 24.
He was buried in the Werl Military Cemetery in Germany.
