Major Walter Wimble Berry, VD was born 31 December 1883 in St Kilda, Melbourne, Australia, son of Howard and Georgina Berry. He was educated at Scotch College and Geelong College, both in Melbourne where he participated in the school’s cadet corps from 1897 to 1900.

Berry worked for Henry Berry and Co, a grocer and general merchant company founded by his uncle in Melbourne, which had established a Toronto presence.  He eventually rose to become Vice-Chairman. He was in the Queen’s Own Rifles for the six years he was living in Canada.

He was awarded the General Service Medal, Victory Medal, George V Silver Jubilee 1935 Medal, George VI Coronation Medal 1937 and Volunteer Officers Decoration.

Berry died in 1952 in Melbourne.

  • 1902 – Appointed 2nd Lieutenant Senior Cadet Battalion
  • 1903 – Promoted Lieutenant Senior Cadet Battalion
  • 1905 – Appointed Lieutenant in Victoria Rifles (Australia)
  • March 1, 1908 – Seconded to the Queen’s own Rifles of Canada and posted to “D” Company, 1st Battalion
  • April 1, 1908 – Granted a temporary commission in Canadian Militia
  • September 23, 1908 – Appointed Adjutant 2nd Battalion
  • 1909 – Promoted Captain
  • March 1, 1911 – Appointed Adjutant 1st Battalion
  • May 1914 – Ceased to be seconded and returned to Australia
  • 1915 – Promoted Captain in Victoria Rifles (Australia)
  • 1916 – Captain in Australian Imperil Forces (AIF)
  • 1916 – Promoted Major
  • 1917 – Transferred to Headquarters, 3rd Australian Division
  • 1918(or 9?) – Transferred to Headquarters, Australian Corps
  • 1920 – Demobilized from AIF
  • 1920 – Transferred to unattached list Australian Military Forces
  • 1925 – Transferred to Reserve of Officers
