Baldwin, George Edward

Major George Edward Baldwin, MBE was born in Belleville, Ontario in 1919. He was educated at Queen Alexandra School and Belleville Collegiate, and enlisted in the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant in November 1941. He joined the regiment in England in December 1942, saw service in Italy and North West Europe, and was awarded the MBE. IN 1944 he was appointed adjutant and served in that capacity until his return to Canada in 1945.

In 1951 George was promoted to the rank of Major to command the Hastings and Prince Edward Company of the First Canadian Infantry Battalion with 27 Canadian Infantry Brigade in Germany. He attended the Canadian Army Staff College in 1953, and following a tour at Army Headquarters, joined the 1st Battalion of The Queen’s Own Rifles in Calgary in 1957. IN February 1960 George left the Battalion to return to Army Headquarters where he served but a few months before his death 21 Jun 1960.  He was buried in Cherry Valley, Ontario with full military honours on 25 June 1960.

George married the former Rita Robbie in 1942 and had two sons Ronald and Richard. He will be remembered for his good humour and imperturability in the face of adversity, and for his love and kindness toward children.
