
B63595 Lieutenant Earl Reginald Stoll was born in Toronto (Long Branch), Ontario on 11 June 1920, the son of Eugene Frederick Stoll.
After completing 3 years of high school, he left at age 16. He was a member of the United Church of Canada and completed three years at Long Branch High School.
Stoll served with The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada militia from 15 June 1938 until his enlistment with the QOR active battalion on 11 June 1940 as a Rifleman. On enlistment, he worked as a folding machine operator in the advertising department of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. He was 5 foot 10 1/2 inches tall, weighed 151 pounds, had a “medium” complexion, and brown hair and eyes.
By September 1940 Stoll was promoted to Corporal and in November to Lance Sergeant. He served with “W” Force in Newfoundland and trained in Sussex, New Brunswick before travelling to the United Kingdom with the QOR in July 1941.
He was promoted Sergeant on 14 June 1942 and then had various postings and attachments including with the 2/4 King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in June 1943 (likely in North Africa at the time.) He returned to the QOR in October 1943 and was promoted to Acting Company Sergeant Major in November. Stoll attended officer training in January and February 1944 and on 2 March was commissioned a Lieutenant. He then served in various reinforcement units and HQ roles until rejoining the QOR as “Sniper Officer” on 15 July 1944.
Lieutenant Stoll was wounded in action near Boulogne, France on 19 September and died on 20 September 1944, aged 24. He is buried in the Calais Canadian War Cemetery, grave reference 6. A. 7. His will left everything to his father (his mother had died before he enlisted.)
