Rifleman Arthur Reed was born in Ireland circa 1846, the son of Abraham Reed.
We know that he was serving in The Queen’s Own Rifles as early as March 1866 and was present at the Battle of Ridgeway on 6 June 1866.
He died on 24 February 1867 of a “disease of the lungs” attributed to his service at Ridgeway.
“In the afternoon went to a military funeral of Arthur Reed, a private in No 8, musical funeral service at Holy Trinity where he was a chorister.”
He is buried in Area O plot 7 of St. James Cemetery, Toronto.
We anticipate a special “Battle of Ridgeway” marker will be placed on his grave by The Queen’s Own Rifles in the fall of 2023.
