Petherbridge, Frederick Charles

172041 Sapper Frederick Charles Petherbridge was born in Bristol England on 2 October 1889, the son of Charles Petherbridge and Elizabeth Edwards.

He arrived in Canada on 15 June 1907 with his parents, one younger brother and three younger sisters, landing in Montreal and then travelling to Toronto.

Petherbridge married Elizabeth McCann on 9 August 1913 in Toronto, Ontario. They had a daughter born in 1915 and a son born in 1920. His son served with the Royal Regiment of Canada and was killed in action at Dieppe in 1942.

He worked as a leather dresser when he enlisted on 10 August 1915 with the largely QOR-recruited 83rd Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. Once in England, he was transferred to the Brigade Signals Base (39th Bn) in May 1916. A month later, transferred to CEDT, and in October to the Signals Pool in France. In the meantime, he’d be appointed Acting Lance Corporal then reverted to rank for disobeying an order.

In late 1916 Petherbridge was twice changed and punished for drunkenness. While overseas his wife received a Separation Allowance of $20 per month.

He returned to England in March 1919 and struck off strength to Canada in April and was discharged on the 24th on demobilization.

He died in Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto, Ontario on 13 April 1958.
