Lieutenant Bruce Herbert was born in Tyrone, Ontario on 12 February 1944, the son of Hugh Herbert McRoberts and Gertrude Edna Haider Bruce. He had a sister Flora and a brother Stewart who served overseas with the Royal Canadian Air Force.
He graduated from high school with a senior matriculation, attended two years of Technical School in Hamilton, and completed his first year at the University of Toronto.
McRoberts served two years with the Ontario Regiment before joining the 3rd Battalion, The Queen’s Own Rifles (Active) on 9 July 1942. He quickly rose up the ranks of the Non-Commissioned Officers and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on 22 April 1943 and a month later, promoted to Lieutenant.
Lieutenant McRoberts joined the 1st Battalion QOR in France on 11 June 1944 and was killed in action by a shell near Grentheville, Normandy on 25 July 1944.
He is buried in Bény-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery, grave reference XII. B. 12.
