Marshall, George Edward

B64376 Corporal George Edward Marshall was born in Ireland on 29 June 1909, the son of David Henry Marshall and Elizabeth Alice. His mother remarried after his father’s death, so he had two brothers, one half-brother and one half-sister. He completed public school and left at age 14.

Marshall was baptized with the name Hector John which he used up to the year 1932 when he started using “George Edward” in his semi-pro hockey career.

Marshall worked as a diamond driller for Noranda Mines in Quebec when he enlisted in Toronto on 21 June 1940. He trained briefly in Camp Borden and then went to Newfoundland with Force “W”. After further training in Debert, Nova Scotia, he arrived in Scotland with the Regiment on 29 July 1941. On 23 September 1941 was appointed Acting Lance Corporal, and 31 December Lance Corporal.

On 17 August 1942, he was struck by an army truck, from which he received a fractured skull and died.

On 23 August 1942, he was buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery, England, grave reference 38. B. 9. Honorary Captain J.C. Clough CCS held the burial service with the funeral party comprised of Captain  S.C. Heyes, Lieutenant J.G. Alley, B63559 Company Sergeant Major S. Score, B64373 Sergeant A.H. Jones, six Corporal pallbearers, firing party of eight with a Corporal and two buglers.
