Lucas, Albert Cranston

Captain AC Lucas 1932

Major Albert Cranston Lucas was born on  16 December 1886 in Guildford, England, the son of Alexander Lucas and Mary Cranston. He had three brothers and two sisters.

On 28 April1906 he married Lillian Campbell King in Toronto, Ontario, and they had a daughter Verna Evelyn Billing Lucas.

Lucas worked as a printer when he enlisted with the Canadian Mounted Rifles Depot on 1 November 1915.

On his attestation form, he claimed 12 years of service with The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada including five as a Corporal and one as a Sergeant.  He participated in the 1910 trip to England as a Rifleman in C Company.

In the First World War, he served in England as an Armourer Sergeant with various CEF reserve battalions and perhaps for a time with the Fort Garry  Horse Depot. In May 1919 Lucas was posted to Bisley for two months before returning to Canada and was discharged from the CEF on 25 Augsut 1919 in Toronto.

Post-war he continued with  The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada as paymaster and attained the rank of Major.

He owned the AJ Speers and Co., printing firm until his retirement circa 1954.

Lucas was also a member of the QOR’s Maple Leaf Rifle Club. He was several times a member of the Canadian team competing in the Bisley rifle matches in England and was a regular competitor in Ontario Rifle Association and Dominion Rifle Association matches.

Major Lucas died at his home in Toronto on 13 March 1964, aged 77.
