B80150 Sergeant Thomas Gumuly was born in Brampton, Ontario on 1 February 1919, the son of Antoni Gumula and Rozalia Dychala (both of Polish descent.) He had two older and one younger sister and was Roman Catholic. Gumuly left school at age 16 having completed Grade XII (Junior Matriculation.) He played lacrosse, tennis, and bowling and enjoyed skating.
He trained with the Lorne Scots (B11050) for the required 30 days in November 1940 and enlisted in Vernon, British Columbia with the Canadian Fusiliers (Active Service) on 11 June 1942. Gumuly worked as a driver salesman for florist W.E. Calvert in Brampton, was 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighed 128 pounds, had a fair complexion, hazel eyes and light brown hair.
He trained in Brantford, Listowel, Ontario, Vancouver, Nanaimo and Vernon, British Columbia and also had various postings in those locations until May 1944. He served with the Fusiliers in Kiska, Alaska in late 1943.

He married Mary Eleanor Swinton on leave on 28 April 1944 only a few weeks before heading overseas.
After training in Debert, Nova Scotia he arrived in the United Kingdom on 2 June 1944 and joined the QOR in France on 20 June.
Sergeant Gumuly was killed in action near Boulogne, France on 21 September 1944 age 25. He is buried in the Calais Canadian War Cemetery, grave reference 6. B. 3.
