#486620 Private Peter Rupert Chappise (Wemaystikosh) was on 10 March 1893 in Moose Factory, Ontario (on Hudson Bay), the son of James Chappise (Wemaystikosh) and Rebeckah Leask. He came from a large family of eight sisters and three brothers.
A nephew was Flying Officer Richard Robert Chappise, who died on June 5, 1945, while serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force.
Chappise was single and working as a surveyor when he enlisted in Niagara on 31 August 1915 with the 37th Overseas Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force.
After arriving in England on the S.S. Lapland, he was first posted to the 17th Reserve Battalion in February 1916, then to the 3rd Battalion on 15 March 1916, then stationed in the Ypres Salient in Belgium.
At 23, Private Chappise was initially reported missing in action. However, he was later presumed to have been killed in action “on or since” 13 June 1916, during the Battle of Mont Sorrel. (This was the same engagement in which Major General Mercer was killed.)
He has no known grave but his name is engraved on the Menin Gate Memorial, Panel 18 – 24 – 26 – 30.
