Bonnell, Edgar George

B115219 Lance Corporal Edgar “Ted” George Bonnell, was born on 2 January 1925 in Scarborough Junction, Ontario, the son of Gordon David Bonnell (a WWI veteran) and Bertha Annie Currier. He came from a large family of six brothers and three sisters, and left school aged 15, having completed Grade 7.

When Bonnell enlisted with the Irish Regiment of Canada on 11 August 1943 he worked as a stock receiver for Crouse-Hinds Ltd (electrical supplies.) He trained at Camp Borden before arriving in the UK on 12 April 1944.

He landed in France on 6 June 1944 as a reinforcement, was posted to The Queen’s Own Rifles on 8 June, and was appointed Lance Corporal on 3 August 1944.

During the battle for Bretteville-sur-Laize, Lance Corporal Bonnell was initially reported as missing but later confirmed as killed in action on 10 August 1944, aged 19, and is buried in Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery, grave reference XIX. F. 4.

His mother received his war gratuity of $125.35 ($2,224.62 in 2024 dollars.)
