1878 QOR Military Band

It was a crowded scene when the Queen’s Own Rifles Military Band was photographed in 1878. Civilian bandmaster William Carey (1875-1879) is in the middle surrounded by his bandsmen and their brass, woodwind and percussion instruments.

There are 42 musicians in the photo with a wide variety of instruments. Included are a pair of cymbals, two snare drums, a bass drum, one piccolo, two flutes, six clarinets, eight E-flat horns, nine cornets, three euphoniums, three trombones, four bombardons, one sarrusophone and one ophicleide. These last three instruments are now seen or heard only rarely, if at all.
