As Regimental Archivist, I’ve been entering names of QOR soldiers into our Collection Management System (called PastPerfect), which currently contains just over 9,000 names.
I’m currently working on entering names and basic information from our First World War Virtual Memorial page. This memorial page, containing 2239 casualties, was made possible through the work done by the former Regimental Padre, Captain Craig Cameron, CD. Additional work on those who joined perpetuated battalions was done by former Regimental Sergeant Major, CWO Shaun Kelly, CD, and museum volunteer Alex Meyer. Our thanks to Operation Picture Me for many of the photos used in individual profiles.
To date, we’ve probably entered about 60% of those WWI casualties into our CMS. We’ve included information gathered from the Canadian Virtual War Memorial, Ancestry.ca, Library and Archives Canada’s online service records, and War Graves Register (Circumstances of Death) cards, also available online.
Today is the 109th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. This battle was the first time that pretty much all Canadians serving in Europe fought together in the First Canadian Corps. While Vimy Ridge was taken by the Canadians after several failed attempts by other allies, it was not a particularly significant contribution to the overall war. However, it is widely regarded as a defining moment in the development of Canadian national identity, often described as the “birth of a nation”.
So far, we have identified 32 soldiers who died on 9 April 1917 in our First World War Memorial, and I’m sure there are more as we continue to enter names and information. These 31 names are in the table below. We encourage you to click the links on the names for more information.
Not included here are (so far) another 11 names of those who died on the 10th and 11th of April, including some who died of wounds received on the 9th.
Not all these soldiers were serving in the 3rd Battalion; however the entry in their war diary for 9 April makes for an interesting read.
