404947 Lt. Harry Wallace Unwin was Born August 9, 1884 to William and Melony Unwin in Plumstead, County of Kent, a southeast suburb of London, England. It is not known when he and his family immigrated to Canada, however his first known address was in Bath, Ontario, east of Toronto on Lake Ontario.
He was 30, single, and a conductor by trade when he enlisted in the 35th Battalion CEF at Niagara On the Lake on the 5th of June 1915. He had previous militia service with The Queen’s Own Rifles and he likely lived in Toronto during that time.
By 25 October, 1915, he is in England for training. In March 1916 he is posted to the 20th Bn CEF which is perpetuated today by the Queen’s York Rangers. By August he is in France, promoted to Lieutenant and transferred to the 1st Bn CEF. One month later, on Sept 22 1916, he was killed in action at Flers-Courcellette.
He is buried in the Albert Communal Cemetery in France alongside his brothers in arms.
